An improved apparatus for reading an information carrier reflective of optical radiation, which apparatus comprises a radiation source that produces a read beam, a target system for focusing the read beam at a reading point on the structure of the information of the information carrier and to form the image of the reading point on a radiation sensitive information detector whose output signal represents the information and an optical-electronic focusing error detection system for determining a deviation between the desired position and the actual position of the focusing plane of the target system, whose focusing error detection system comprises two radiation sensitive focusing detectors which cooperate with a narrow focusing beam, providing the difference between the output signal of the detectors of focusing an indication about said deviation, characterized in that the trajectory of the radiation in the read beam, one side of the optical axis of the target system includes a radiation deflection element whose surface area is substantially smaller than the cross-sectional area of the read beam.
