Abstract

1348496 Spot-type disc brakes GENERAL MOTORS (FRANCE) 16 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60776/70 Heading F2E A disc brake assembly comprises a rotary disc 1, a stationary carrier 2 having two arms 3 spaced circumferentially of the disc, a caliper 6 which has opposite sides straddling the disc faces and is slidably supported by the carrier arms and a pair of brake pads 23, 24, located at opposite faces of the disc between the sides of the caliper and supported on the caliper so as to transmit brake torque thereto, one pad 23 being directly movable into contact with one face of the disc by operation of a piston and cylinder assembly so as by reaction to effect sliding of the caliper to apply the other pad 24 to the other face of the disc, each arm of the carrier having a post 4 projecting through an aperture in the caliper and engageable by the caliper so as to receive brake torque load therefrom, means 21 being provided for securing the caliper to the post. In the construction shown the caliper is made of sheet metal and carries the piston and cylinder assembly 8 in an opening; the body 8 has two opposite slots 9 into which projecting ears 10 of the edge of the opening fit tightly; the body includes two cylinders 13 each having within it a slidable hollow piston 14, the pistons acting on the brake pad 23. The means securing the caliper to the post are spring clips. As shown, each of the brake pads is provided with ears 25 which rest on the upper surface of the caliper and each pad has two pairs of projections 26; the projections 26 of the pad 23 engage in hollows of the cylinders and the projections 26 of the pad 24 engage opposite sides of the edge of an opening of the caliper. In a modification the pad 24 has end projections 27 instead of the projections 26 and these engage the surface of the caliper opposite to that engaged by the ears 25. A modification of the caliper is described and shown in which strip-like portions are bent in opposite directions and between which the cylinder body is mounted; alternatively the strip-like portions may be riveted or welded to the remainder of the caliper instead of being integral therewith (as shown).
