Abstract

1348408 Airships H PAPST 19 April 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 22802/71 Heading B7W A method of operating an airship comprises employing, as both lifting gas and fuel supply stored in a storage bag or bags, an inflammable lighter-than-air gas selected from hydrogen, methane and hydrocarbon-containing gas, generating power to drive said airship by consuming said inflammable gas, and employing as lifting gas at least a part of the product gas obtained by consumption of said inflammable gas. An airship comprises a double walled outer envelope 1 enclosing flexible invertable walls 3a, 3b, 3c forming chambers 37, 43, 41, 45. The chambers 37 contain said inflammable gas; chambers 43 contain saturated water vapour; chambers 41 contain cold or heated air and are used as compensation chambers, and chambers 45 store a gas, e.g. carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen and air for filling the space between the two walls of envelope 1. A centre chamber 39 contains buoyant gas. The airship is propelled by a main blower 33 which discharges a propulsion jet through nozzle 9 and a blower 31 provides propulsion under slow speed conditions, directional control being provided by vanes 13a. In operation inflammable gas from chambers 37 and water vapour from chamber 43 are delivered to a catalyst apparatus 60 where they are reacted and the product gas is supplied to chamber 39. Exhaust gas in duct 47 from blower 33 is passed through apparatus 60 where it is heated and then passed to condenser 57 to condense out water vapour. Any waste gas can be conducted to a channel 15 to discharge through nozzle 9.
