Abstract

1348348 Band brakes; drum rotation in either direction A BRUSSELLE 4 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 5406/72 Addition to 1209166 Heading F2E A circular band brake assembly for a rotating drum comprises a drum rim and a circular band provided with friction surfaces, the tightening and loosening of the band being effected by a control and regulating mechanism which is connected to each end of the band, the mechanism acting on the beginning of the band (for a particular direction of rotation) where there is the greatest traction force, whatever the direction of rotation of the drum; preferably the band is connected to a fixed frame supporting the drum axle at a single point. As shown, a rim 5, integral with a cable drum 3, is surrounded by a lined brake band 6, one end of which is provided with a "shoe" 11 having pivoted to it a stop member 8. The other end of band 6 has a similar "shoe" and stop member 11a and 15 respectively, stop members 8 and 15 being slidable on a control rod 17 attached to a piston 19. Between stop members 8, 15, control rod 17 passes through a linking member 10 which is pivoted at 13 to the piston 12 of a torque-measuring cylinder 14. For clockwise rotation, Fig. 1, the drag exerted on the band 6 urges stop 8 into contact with the upper surface of member 10, leaving a clearance A (for the degree of brake application shown) between the lower surface of member 10 and stop 15. (Stop 15 is retained by nut 18.) Spring washers 21 force piston 19 and rod 17 upwards to increase brake application when fluid pressure is relieved at 22, while brake release is effected by feeding pressure fluid at 22. Thus brake application and release are associated with the "beginning" of the band for the time being, namely at "shoe" 11a, while the other end of the band is temporarily anchored at 10, 12, 14. For counterclockwise rotation, Fig. 3, stop 15 is urged against the lower surface of member 10, the part of the band attached to shoe 11 is now the "beginning" of the band, and it is the cylinder structure 20 which is forced downwards about rod 17 on relief of pressure at 22 to increase the brake application, and upwards by pressure application to release the brake.
