Abstract

1,059,177. Disc brakes. T. CAMPAGNOLO. April 13, 1964 [April 12, 1963; Jan. 25, 1984], No. 15208/64. Heading F2E. A disc brake of the floating caliper type has the caliper formed by a cylinder slidable telescopically within a fixed cylinder secured to an axle frame and in which each cylinder has a portion Out-away in the radial direction to receive a disc mounted on an axle journalled in the axle frame; a pair of friction pads, applying means and wear-adjustment means being carried in the slidable cylinder for applying one pad directly, and the other pad by reaction force, to the disc. The arrangement of Fig. 1 comprises pads 29, 30 which are applied mechanically via an arm 25 which rotates an integrally formed washer 34 having inclined grooves co-operating with balls 33 and with grooves in a second washer 32 held against rotation to cause the latter to apply pad 30, the reaction force acting via inner cylinder 22, slidable in fixed cylinder 21, to apply the other pad 29 which is adjustable relative to the end wall 28 of cylinder 22 by screw means. A return spring 37 acts on washer 32 via a pin 31. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the mechanical actuator is similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but the fixed cylinder (41) has integral flanges (43), (46) for attachment to an axle and suspension assembly of a motorcycle or motorized bicycle, and an integral support (47) for an operating cable for the arm (50) of the actuator. In Fig. 4 (not shown), an assembly for a scooter comprises slidable cylinder (70) which has an integrally formed caliper portion (71) embracing the inner edge of an annular disc (66) secured by bolts (67) to wheel (62). The fixed cylinder (68) is secured to lower member (64) of a suspension assembly (61). Mechanical actuator (69) is as in the previous embodiment.
