Abstract

1347069 Carbon black CABOT CORP 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970 6 April 1970] 25582/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A carbon black is characterized by having an activity factor, i.e. the numerical product of the specific surface area in m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. of carbon black and the hydrogen content in millimoles/gm. of carbon black, greater than 175, a value for the ratio of non-porous specific surface area of the carbon black to total specific surface area of the carbon black which is at least 0À8 and a dibutyl phthalate absorption value of at least 110 ml. of dibutyl phthalate absorbed by 100 gms. of black. The activity factor is preferably greater than 185, and the surface area ratio greater than 0À9, the DBP value varying from 130 to 180. The above stated black may be used as a rubber filler for natural and synthetic rubbers. The black may be mixed in an amount of 10 to 250 parts by weight black to 100 parts by wt. of rubber, and the mixture vulcanized. Lists are given in the Specification of suitable rubbers, and, styrene-butadiene copolymers and natural rubber are exemplified. Many other rubber additives, e.g. softeners, accelerators, antioxidants and curing agents are listed.
