1346837 Covering cores by S-Z winding SIEMENS AG 25 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 49530/71 Heading B8G A covering tape or filament 6 is wound in S-Z manner about a core 1 (Fig. 8), 21 (Fig. 5) travelling between axially stationary supply and take-up devices 23 by rotating a portion of the core therebetween using twisting devices 12, 44, 45 rotated in alternating directions, or at varying speeds in one direction, or rotated uniformly whilst the speed v 0 of the core is varied. The wrapping material 6, 46 is drawn from a stationary spool 5, 48, and an adhesive, or clamping means, is applied by a device 7, 47 to secure the covering material at its reversal points. The twisting of the core may be performed by a device (Fig. 7) comprising a pair of endless bands 30, 31 travelling over rollers 32, 33 mounted in a rotated frame 36 supported by ball bearings on a stationary frame 34. The spacing between the bands may be adjusted to suit different cores by screws in slots. In Fig. 8, the core passes over two synchronously rotating longitudinal storage devices 44, 45, being covered between them. The direction of rotation of the storage devices is reversed at intervals of duration equal to the time a point on the core takes to pass through one of them, so that the pitch of covering at the application point is halved at the take-up point, where the core is untwisted. An alternating twist may be permanently applied to the core during the same operation. If the distance d (Fig. 5) is substantially less than the distance e, or if an additional variable twisting device is located near the take-up device 3, such twisting of the core will occur. If the storage devices of the Fig. 8 embodiment are rotated in synchronism but at different speeds, the product will again have an S-Z- twisted core. Several supply and core-covering devices may each twist and cover a group of conductors 22 (Fig. 6) all passing via a stranding nipple 23 to a rotating take-up mechanism where the groups are twisted together.
