Abstract

1345485 Rotary boilers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 13875/72 Heading F4A A rotary boiler comprises: a generally cylindrical structure 1 having axially spaced apart side wall portions 2, 3 interconnected by a peripheral wall 4 defining a boiler chamber V; means 14, 15 to admit liquid to the boiler chamber; means M to rotationally drive the boiler at a predetermined speed to dispose and maintain a body of liquid continuously about the inner surface of the peripheral wall 4 with a cylindrical liquid/vapour interface X of a predetermined radius from the axis of rotation; a combustion box 21 adjacent the peripheral wall 4 of the boiler chamber; and means 10, 11 for withdrawing the vapour from the boiler chamber, the linear axial spacing of the boiler side wall portions 2, 3 at said predetermined radius and at the peripheral wall 4 being substantially the same, and the peripheral wall 4 being contoured such that its total length in the axial direction is considerably greater than (at least one and one half times, preferably three to five times) the linear axial spacing of the side wall portions. The wall 4 is corrugated in the axial direction, but alternative forms of contours may be used, Figs. 8 to 11 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the boiler chamber (V<SP>1</SP>) is generally annular, the chamber being supported on its rotational shaft (5a) by means of radial spoke-like vapour tubes (10a) which also serve for the withdrawal of the vapour from the boiler chamber. Liquid enters the chamber (V<SP>1</SP>) through tubes (15a) extending co-axially within the vapour tubes (10a).
