Abstract

1345412 Alarm systems N W LEWIS 31 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3870/71 Heading G4N An alarm system comprise a loop including a rectifier 4 and sensing contacts 3, 5, a first relay 14, normally energized so as to respond to open circuiting of the loop and further relay 11, normally de-energized so as to respond to short circuiting of the rectifier 4. As described, sensing switches 3, 5 may be operated by opening a window or drawer, or by pressure on a carpet and may be magnetically-operated reed units. Alternatively, the switches may be heat- or light-responsive. With switch 6 in the "Normal" position shown, relay 11 is energized from transformer 7 via rectifiers 4 and 9, but becomes released by the opening of series contacts 3. Relay 14 is energized via rectifier 12 if any of the shunt contacts 5 is closed. The release of relay 11 or energization of relay 14 energizes relay 23 to operate alarm 27. The alarm 27 continues until reset by switch 6, which may be operated by a key or combination. A 30 sec. delay may be included to allow authorized resetting of a burglar alarm. Modifications.-Rectifiers 9 and 28 may be omitted if polarized relays are used. Relays 11 and 14 may be replaced by thyristors operating in conjunction with integrated logic circuits. The loop may contain chokes or capacitors, the impedance of which changes in response to the proximity of an intruder. Multiple loop systems.-In Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of loops similar to that shown in Fig. 1 are connected in series with a single rectifier. Each loop has a three-position control switch providing "alert", "dormant" and "reset" facilities.
