Abstract

1345375 Endoscope AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 30 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 45550/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division G2] An endoscope comprises a catheter tubing 12 having a bundle 16 of afferent and efferent light conducting fibres 18 extending longitudinally therein with one end 26 of the bundle being directed laterally of the tubing to an aperture in the wall, the tubing 12 having an extension forming an end section 12a beyond the end of the bundle 16, the extension being curved in the same direction as the end of the bundles of fibres. The main section 12a and end section 12b are joined by a slotted collar 28 and slotted inner fitting 14 through which projects the optical fibres which are secured to the fitting 14 and made flush with the wall of the tubing 12 by an adhesive agent 24. The distal end of the tubing is closed by a smooth metallic tip 30 which is connected to a lead 32 for use in electrical stimulus. The other end of the tubing is connected to a Y-shaped junction block (36) Fig. 1 (not shown) to where the two sets of light fibres are led to a light emitting source (46) and a light receiving apparatus (48). The curved end portion of the endoscope 10 allows free flow of a fluid such as blood across the face 26 of the fibres. The endoscope may contain a flexible tubule for sampling fluids around the distal end of the endoscope. A rigid keeper (58) Fig. 4 (not shown) is provided to protect the curved end portion of the endoscope when not in use. A thin sleeve of translucent material may be placed over the face 26 of the optical fibres to diffuse the light emitted.
