Abstract

1345129 Programmed control of machine tools BENDIX CORP 18 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 17893/72 Heading G3N In a numerically controlled system, tool radius compensation is provided by using stored algorithms written in terms of a general tool radius. The required profile is divided into segments defined mathematically, for each of which the algorithms are used to calculate offset tool paths corresponding to the radius of the particular tool to be used. In an embodiment, a program including the required profile information in the form of magnetic tape, paper tape or punched cards is fed to an on-line digital computer. Segments of the profile are represented by data blocks defining linear and curved paths in terms of the longitudinal and transverse axes of the machine tool. One of the three modes may be employed in operation. First, the co-ordinates of the actual machining path may be programmed with the algorithms, and the operator manually inserts the actual tool radius which is used by the computer to calculate the offset parameters. Second, the algorithms may be programmed with an assumed tool radius, and the operator supplies an input representing the difference between the actual and assumed radius. Third, the tool radius is included in the programmed profile which then represents the path of the centre of the tool. The operator supplies the value of the actual tool radius. Fig. 2 shows a part 21 for turning in a lathe to produce an inside corner defined by segments 22, 23. Each segment is linear and is represented by a data block in the computer. The blocks are stored and used sequentially to control tool operation. In order to control the centre of the tool to follow a path 27, 28 and thus avoid undercutting, algorithms are set up for calculating offset factors L, M in terms of X and Z axis increments and the tool radius R. The signs for the offset factors are also determined, and the location of the compensated segment end point O is calculated.
