Abstract

1344776 Riveting HUCK MFG CO 25 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971 14 Sept 1971] 3538/72 Heading B3U A nut torquing and crimping tool comprises a plurality of crimping jaws 32 mounted in a collet 26, a draw bar 34 having one end connected to the jaws for axial movement of the jaws relative to the collet, and a rotatable housing 62 connected to the other end of the draw bar 34 in such a way that rotation of the housing relative to the draw bar causes the draw bar to move axially. In operation a rotatable power tool is applied to the housing 62 via the hexagonal end 78 and, due to inertia and friction, the housing will, intially rotate relative to the draw bar 34. The relative rotation causes the jaws 32 to grip the nut because the collet 26 is moved forwardly relative to the jaws due to the screw threaded engagement of the draw bar with the housing. As the jaws grip the nut, the force required to rotate the draw bar 34 relative to the housing 62 increases resulting in the entire tool rotating and the nut being threaded on the bolt. As the nut is tightened against the workpiece, the torque required to turn the nut further increases so that, on increase of torque at the end 78, the housing 62 is again rotated relative to the jaws 32. The alternative sequence of nut running and crimping will continue until the material of nut is crimped into the threads of the bolt after which any further increase in torque results solely in a crimping action. The amount of crimp is controlled by the amount of relative axial movement between the draw bar 34 and the housing 62, the latter amount being adjustable by means of an annular bushing 80. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the relative axial movement is effected by a camming action. In a third embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the relative axial movement is effected by a helical recirculating ball assembly (122) and the torque is applied via a planetary gear assembly.
