Abstract
134,471. Agudio, E. March 20, 1919. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses adapted to operate on impact in any direction, and consists in certain combinations of parts comprising a hammer and cap-holder slidably arranged with one entering the other and having their heads pressed against conical end walls of the fuse-body, a safety-device being provided consisting of a number of radial locking-pins and retaining sleeves. Several constructions are described and shown. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the firing-hammer 8 and the cap-holder 14 are normally held at " safe " by pino 10 which are retained by a sleeve 12. On discharge, a second sleeve 13 sets back, overcoming a spring 15, and thus rendering the sleeve. 12 free to move forward and release the locking-pins 10 during the flight of the projectile. In a modification, the sleeve 13 has an inner flange upon which the spring 11 bears. In this case when acceleration is over after the projectile has been fired, the spring advances both the sleeves together. A fuse for grenades is of similar construction, but has an outer cap carrying two pins which project through the fuse-body and bear against the ring 13. When the grenade is to be thrown by hand, the outercap is first pushed in, so as to force the sleeve 13 back. Fig. 2 shows a further construction, for use with aerial bombs. In this case, the bomb is caused to rotate as it falls. An outer sleeve 20 first drops off, releasing pins 10<1> which are thrown cut; the sleeve 12 then slides forward, uncovering the pins 10 which are also thrown out of position, leaving the fuse armed.
