Abstract
1344619 Selective signalling APV CO Ltd 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 21362/70 Heading G4H A control system comprises a controller to which a plurality of transducers and/or control devices are connected by a plurality of lines in a loop, a decoder being associated with each transducer and/or control device, some of the lines being utilized for the transmission of a code for the selection of a particular transducer or control device of the plurality of transducers and/or control devices, the controller including means for testing the continuity of each line. As described, a 19-wire cable connects valve stations and the controller in a potable liquid process installation (e.g. dairy or brewery) in a loop, a station being addressed (selected) by energizing 2 out of 5 of the lines plus 2 out of another 5 plus 1 out of 2, the decoder in the selected station having only these lines connected through respective diodes, a resistor and a Zener diode to cause a transistor to conduct, the junction of the resistor and Zener diode being connected to a power supply via a resistor and to earth via a capacitor. Conduction of the transistor permits a latching relay controlling the valve to be set in one of two states according to which of two further wires of the 19 wires is energized, and energizes through diodes a further one of the 19 wires and (depending on the relay state) one of two more of the 19 wires to notify the controller of the relay state. The remaining two of the 19 wires are used for power supply. As a modification, 15 wires may be used for station selection, in 3 groups of 2 out of 5. The controller may include a computer which selects the valve stations in turn, and a panel permitting manual selection and control of valves and display on lights of valve state. The controller uses relays to test the continuity of the wires in turn periodically. A second set of decoders may be connected to the wires, with the same addresses as the above decoders respectively, and if the computer fails, an oscillatordriven counter addresses all the decoders in turn, those of the second set latching valve state information from the valve stations and using it to control a mimic diagram display. Each decoder of the second set includes a switch for supplying a signal to the associated valve station when the corresponding address is generated. Control of reversible motors, product routing and in-place cleaning is also mentioned.
