Abstract

1344613 Photo-electric detection and measurement BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 11 May 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 6861/70 Heading G1A In an apparatus for detecting a departure of a monitored area of a surface from a datum plane 2A, Fig.2, two beams A. B derived by a beam splitter 6 from a source 1 of coherent light such as a laser are arranged to converge at a small angle and focus upon the datum plane at two spaced points 20, 21 in order to produce spatial optical fringe pattern in the scattered light, and any change in the pitch of the fringe pattern is detected to indicate a departure. The arrangement may indicate the occurrence of a departure, or its degree, and may be used to monitor the frequency and or amplitude of vibration of a transversely vibrating plane, an image dissector or an array of photo-diodes being used, and the frequency modulated signal produced by the frequency of vibration being demodulated. A pair of such apparatus may be directed at the surfaces of a running web in order to detect its thickness or a change in its thickness.
