Abstract

1343985 Cable harness assembly apparatus PANDUIT CORP 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 23712/71 Heading H2C [Also in Division E2] A holder for retaining objects comprises a frame and a pair of relatively movable arms 21 on the frame, which terminate in opposed spaced ends 23. The arms move to vary the space 23a between the ends 23 from a position in which the objects are retained (Fig. 4), to a position in which the objects may be inserted (Fig. 3) or removed (Fig. 6, not shown). An elastic band 25 spans the space 23a and receives and holds the objects when they are inserted. As shown a holder suitable for holding a bundle of wires B on a jig while a harness is being fabricated comprises upstanding walls on the frame having U-shaped cut-outs defining legs 18 upon which cranks are pivotally mounted by pins 19 which enter elongated slots 24 formed in the legs. The cranks comprise retainer arms 21 and depending arms 22, the retainer arms having slots 32 formed near their ends 23. Elastic band 25 is connected to studs 27 and passes round pins 28 on the arms 22, and pins 30 and 31 on the frame, before passing through slots 32 and spanning the space 23a. The elastic band is tensioned so as to position the arms 21 in their retaining position. The bundle of wires B is inserted by pushing down on the retaining arms (Fig. 3) and may be removed by pulling up the retaining arms (Fig. 6, not shown). In similar embodiments lock pins (126) (Fig. 9, not shown), stop pins (208) (Fig. 14, not shown) or a flexible stop (155) (Fig. 11, not shown) are employed to prevent accidental removal of the objects by restricting rotation of the arms. Further embodiments include a holder in which one retainer arm is fixed to the frame (Fig. 8, not shown); a holder in which the retainer arms are formed as resilient bowed arms of a U-shaped yoke (Fig. 16, not shown): and a holder in which the retainer arms are formed as resilient arcuate arms and have blocks of resilient material, e.g. sponge rubber adhering to their undersides (Fig. 22, not shown).
