Abstract

1343275 Homopolar machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 Nov 1969] 53842/69 Heading H2A To reduce the external field of a homopolar. machine having a super conducting field coil mounted coaxially with the rotor, a pair of superconducting screening coils are mounted on opposite sides of the field coil, the screening coils having a diameter at least as large as that of the field coil and being of opposite polarity. Fig. 1 shows a machine with a dream type rotor 10 in which the screening coils 15, 16 are the same diameter as the field coil 13. The fields B of the screening coils reinforce that (n) of the field coil adjacent the latter and oppose the field A externally of the screening coils. Where the rotor has field coils at opposite ends, screening coils of larger diameter are used as is the case with a machine having a disc type rotor 18, Fig. 2, in which the screening coils are shown at 22, 23.
