Abstract
1342957 Dehydrogenating hydrocarbons INSTITUTUL DE CERCETARI PENTRU CHIMIZAREA PETROLULUI "PETROCHIM" 29 April 1971 12220/71 Heading C5E [Also in Divisions B1 and C3] Olefins and alkylbenzenes are dehydrogenated to the corresponding diolefins and alkenylbenzenes in the presence of self-regenerating ferric oxide-containing catalyst prepared by a method which comprises forming a mouldable paste containing polystyrene beads having a size of from 0À1 to 0À6 mm., ferric oxide, chromium oxide, potassium carbonate and water, extruding the paste and calcining the resulting extrudate thereby to decompose the polystyrene beads and to provide material which may have a porosity in excess of 50%; examples relate to the use of such material in the dehydrogenation of n-butenes to butadienes at 650‹ C., of isopropylbenzene to alpha-methylstyrene at 540‹ C. and of ethylbenzene to styrene at 560‹ C.
