Abstract

1342927 Sound measurement SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 15222/71 Heading H4D Operating conditions in a blast furnace are judged by detecting the magnitude and varying distribution of solid-borne sound levels at selected points on the mantle of the furnace by means of sound detectors at those points to determine variation of the thickness of deposits on the wall and the occurrence and position of any movement of the burden. Sound detectors 1 of the Fig. 5 embodiment are positioned at one or more levels of the mantle, preferably at 90 degree intervals around the outside of the mantle at each level, the levels being about “ to ¥ of the way up the furnace shaft. The detector outputs are amplified at 2, sampled in turn by switch 3, amplified at 4, and passed through a 5À6-11À2 kHz bandpass filter 5, then the resulting signals are rectified and logarithmically compressed in a servo system comprising A.C. amplifier 6, rectifier 7, D.C. amplifier 8, and potentiometers 9-1, 9-2, 9-3 &c. driven by servomotors M. The compressed signal from 9-2 is integrated at 20 and recorded at 13. Signals representing reference sound levels, obtained from unit 17, are applied to potentiometers 9-3 and the respective differences between the compressed measured sound levels and these reference levels are fed via integrators 10 to summing unit 11 and also to respective indicators 18. The summation signal is shifted through a store 12 to effectively lengthen the integration time, then compared with a reference level at 15. Alarm 16 is actuated if the reference level is exceeded. The sound level measurements may be used to predict instability of furnace operation, such as slip or "hanging" of the burden, and to provide a control signal for avoiding such instability.
