Abstract
1342829 Spools; detachable core FERNANDEZ COLMEIRO SA 22 March 1971 7462/71 Heading B8M A spool to receive package wound filamentary material, e.g. wire, comprises a housing including a cylindrical wrapper 1a, 1b, and two axiallyspaced end discs 8, 9, each disc having a central opening 10, an axially-tapered tubular core 11 having at each end an external annular rib 12, the core 11 being longitudinally slotted and resiliently deformable such that it can assume an expanded state in which it engages into the openings 10 in the discs 8, 9 and each disc is abutted by the respective rib 12, and a contracted state in which the ribs 12 can pass through the disc openings 10, and an expander key 13 for insertion in the longitudinal slot of the core 11 to retian the core in the expanded state. The disc 8 preferably has a radial groove 15 through which the outermost end of filamentary material may pass to the interior of the spool; the key 13 being provided with slots 16 mating with the groove 15. The wrapper is preferably formed of two semi-cylindrical portions 1a, 1b held together by knuckle and pin joints. The internal surface of the wrapper may be provided with a resiliently deformable padding material 6, strips or an assembly of prongs for holding the coil in position. During operation, the key 13 is removed, the core 11 compressed and removed and the inner end of the coil is fed to the relevant machine; the external free end may be joined to the inner end of a succeeding coil.
