1342359 Severing D H PROWSE & CO Ltd 27 Aug 1971 [28 Aug 1970 25 Feb 1971] 41493/70 and 5395/71 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A cutting device for hard abrasive materials such as refractory materials, metals, plastics, ceramics, fibre glass, stones, granites, marble and the like, comprises an elongate flexible filiform abrasive carrying member and means for mounting opposite ends of the member in a mechanism for effecting relative reciprocation lengthwise of the member between the member and a block of material to be cut, and means for allowing for changes in the angle of attack of the carrying member relative to the block at the points of entry and exit of the member, which changes are caused when the carrying member bows under cutting pressure. The device may have a plurality of abrasive carrying members 5, Fig. 1, having their ends secured to carriages 2 reciprocated in guides 1 by a crank mechanism 4, the guides being movable downwardly on columns 3 during cutting of a workpiece 6. In another embodiment the abrasive carrying members (10, Fig. 2, not shown) are mounted between arms (7) swingable about pivots on bearers (8) on vertical column (9) by a crank (11). As shown in Fig. 3, the angle of attack of the abrasive carrying member 13 changes at the entry and exit of the block 14 being out so the member is reciprocated. Each end of the abrasive carrying member 21, Fig. 8, has a conical collar 23 secured thereto and urged by tension in the member into a sleeve 20 mounted by way of a thrust bearing 25, which permits rotation of the member, in a bracket 24; the rotation may be effected by an indexing device or fine thread so that different cutting faces of the member are presented to the workpiece for succeeding cuts. The bracket is mounted by a pin 26 on an arm 27 secured by brackets 28, 29 to a plate 19, the plates comprising end fittings on the carriages for reciprocating the member, a row of plates being carried by each carriage for mounting a plurality of members. The pins 26 permit pivotal movement of the ends of the abrasive carrying members in the planes of cutting to accommodate the changes of angle at exit and entry. In other embodiments, the change of angle is allowed for by leaf springs or torsion bars. Each member may be in the form of a wire or rod of steel, nylon, fibre and completely coated with abrasion, such as natural or synthetic abrasive or diamond particles, boron or other carbide, or coated with a spiral of the abrasive. The abrasive may be deposited electrically or chemically or by spray using a molten metal. In other embodiments, the abrasive is impregnated, surface set or coated on tubular carrying elements 16, Fig. 6, secured by crimping or welding to a wire member 17. The elements may be barrel shaped or tapered and interposed with non-abrasive elements.
