1342297 Citric acid JUNGBUNZLAUER SPIRITUS UND CHEMISCHE FABRIK AG 13 May 1971 [1 June 1970] 14752/71 Heading C2C Citric acid is prepared by submerged fermentation of carbohydrate containing material in the presence of the mould Aspergillus niger in the presence of stainless steel. The nutrient solution contains partially purified carbohydrates, e.g. sugar purified by decationization, and the fermentation is carried out in the presence of stainless steel which in addition to iron and copper contains chromium, manganese, nickel, molybdenum, niobium and/or titanium. The stainless steel may be present as a structural part of the fermentor, feed lines or cooling coil or by the introduction of a piece of steel and a surface ratio of 1.2 cm.<SP>2</SP>/100 ml. of nutrient solution is preferred.
