Abstract
1342124 Steam or vapour engines and plant J A BURKE Jnr E COX E COX III and J G DAVOUD [trading as EDWIN COX ASSOCIATES] 23 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34600/71 Headings F1M and F1Q An engine comprises means for heating a condensable fluid to a vapour state, means for expanding the vapour isentropically, means for separating the expanded fluid into at least two portions without substantially changing the state of at least one of the portions, means for adding liquid to one portion of which the state is substantially unchanged, means for compressing the mixture isentropically to the operating pressure and means for re-heating the compressed vapour. The description relates to use of steam as the working fluid but other condensable vapours can be used. The engine can be a turbine or rotary engine or a single or double acting reciprocating engine. The figure shows the application to a turbine plant. The lesser portion of the steam separated at 155 is passed to a re-heater 158 and then to a lowpressure turbine 160 where it expands and exhausts to a condenser 162. The remainder of the steam from the high-pressure turbine is passed directly to the low-pressure end of a compressor 156 in which it is compressed together with water injected during compression through the conduit 166. From the compressor the steam passes to the super-heater 152.
