1341995 Linear motors JEUMONTSCHNEIDER 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970 27 Nov 1970] 23174/71 Heading H2A In a linear induction motor of tubular construction wherein an armature and inductor are arranged to slide one within the other, the inductor comprises an assembly of coils and discs of magnetizable material arranged alternately and held together by end plates and tie rods, the side of the inductor remote from the armature having at least one member of magnetizable material extending over the length thereof and in good contact with the discs. As shown in Fig. 1, the magnetizable member comprises a split sleeve 4 enclosing the coils and discs of an external inductor and which in addition to forming a flux return path, acts as a spacer between the end plates 5. Alternatively, Fig. 3, tubes 9 of magnetizable material surround the tie rods 6 and are located at the bottoms of grooves (10) in the discs 3a. In another arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the tubes 9 are replaced by U-shaped elements (12). Fig 7 shows a further embodiment in which longitudinally extending strips 16 of magnetizable material are clamped to flats 13a provided at diametrically opposite points on the discs 3c and end plates 15 by plates 17 and transverse tie rods 18. Alternatively, Fig. 10, rods 23 are held against the discs by a sleeve 22 gripped between the end plates. Cooling fins may be provided on the sleeve 22 in Fig. 10 or the sleeve 4 in Fig. 1 or between the coils and discs in Figs. 3 and 5. In Fig. 7, the edges of the discs between the flats may form cooling fins and the strips 16 may be distributed in clusters for a similar purpose.
