Abstract

1341928 Amalgamated Zn battery anodes P R MALLORY & CO Inc 9 Feb 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 6122/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division H1] A battery anode is made by mixing Zn powder, mercuric oxide powder and a chloride-free filler material and dissolving out the filler material with a chloride-free acid leachant to leave a porous amalgamated chloride-free Zn anode which has a lowered tendency to anode gassing. In example, the powder mix is pressed to make green anodes prior to leaching. The leachant may be acetic, oxalic or boric acid and the filler is preferably the corresponding sodium salt. The product may be washed with de-ionized water until the effluent has a pH of at least 6, washed with alcohol and dried (e.g. in air). The product amalgam contains trace amounts (e.g. up to 1%) of inert chloride-free (e.g. acetate, borate or oxalate) ions integrally united at specific lattice sites to reduce anode gassing.
