Abstract
1341786 Carbon black PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 13 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 14763/71 Addition to 1291487 Heading C1A In preparing carbon black by the process of the parent application, that is by introducing a hydrocarbon feedstock downwardly into a vertically arranged pyrolysis zone, contacting the feedstock in the pyrolysis zone with a mass of hot free oxygen containing gas at a temperature sufficient to maintain the feedstock at a temperature in the range 2400‹ to 2500‹ F., transporting the mixture downwardly through the pyrolysis zone at a linear velocity of less than 15 f.p.s. and recovering the black from the effluent, the feedstock is sprayed into the pyrolysis zone using at least 60 feet<SP>3</SP> of atomizing gas per gallon of feedstock, and the amount of oxidizing gas in the pyrolysis zone supplied as atomizing gas and oxidant is equivalent to at least 445 sq. feet of air/gallon of feedstock. The preferred atomizing gas is air. The h.c. feedstock may be introduced axially into the pyrolysis zone and be contacted therein with a peripheral stream of hot free oxygen containing gas. The stream of hot free-oxygen containing gas is preferably a mass of hot combustion gas produced by the combustion of fuel or part of the feedstock in the presence of a free oxygen containing combustion supporting gas. At least part of the combustion supporting gas may be introduced axially into the pyrolysis zone. When the feedstock is not used as the fuel, at least part of the combustion supporting gas and the fuel are introduced into the periphery of the pyrolysis zone. The preferred combustion supporting gas is air. The furnace black produced is said to have a surface area in the range 14-20 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and a structure measured by dibutylphthalate absorption in the range of 24-110 c.c. per 100 gms. The process may be performed using the ranges of pressure, velocity flow, and other preferred and suitable parameters from the Specification 1,291,487.
