Abstract
1341660 Valves ETABS CARPANO & PONSSA 4 April 1972 [7 April 1971] 15476/72 Heading F2V [Also in Division H1] To avoid the difficulty of manually setting an accurate start position of a programming cam assembly 1 (for electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic switching) due to the uneven loading as the assembly is rotated, means are provided whereby the manual adjustment does not directly rotate the assembly 1 but sets two mutually coupled special coaxial cams 5 and 10 having slight lost motion therebetween which causes a common follower 16 to energize means for rapid automatic rotation of assembly 1 to the set start position, whereupon the said lost motion is taken up and automatic rotation ceases. Cams 5 and 10 have identical profiles of regular peaks and troughs, and a clutch member 2 ensures that these cams are coupled to the assembly 1 under automatic drive conditions but are disconnected during manual control. As shown, cam assembly 1 is loose on a shaft 6 but coupled by splines (Fig. 3, not shown) to member 2, which is axially loaded by spring 7 and has at least one sawtooth lug 4 engaging cam 5 such that rotation of cam assembly 1 turns cam 5, but turning cam 5 moves member 2 axially and does not rotate assembly 1. Cam 5 has a lug 8 engaging an aperture 15 in cam 10 with lost motion equal to the pitch of the profiles of cams 5 and 10, which corresponds to one normal step of assembly 1. Shaft 1 is pinned to cam 10 at 22 and to a knob 20 at 21. When knob 20 is turned to set a desired start position the cam 10 (but not assembly 1) is rotated, aperture 15 entrains lug 8, and cams 5 and 10 are thus moved to the selected start position with their profiles in alignment. Common follower 16 thus closes contacts 18, 19 to energize drive means (not shown) which rotates assembly 1 and member 2 rapidly until lug 4 enters a recess in cam 5, entraining the latter to take up the lost motion and restore cams 5 and 10 out of alignment. Follower 16 is thus urged to open contacts 18, 19 and stop the rapid advance with assembly 1 in the desired start position.
