Abstract

1341473 Variable pitch screws J M PEDERSEN 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 21856/71 Heading B7V A fluid pressure servomotor control system for adjusting the pitch of the blades 20 of a variable pitch marine screw, comprises a power output piston 39 mounted on a hollow shaft 38 housing the pilot valve spool 62 which is urged to the right by spring 69, and to the left by control pressure applied through a rotary coupling 14, the arrangement being such that upon movement of spool 62 the piston is moved to a corresponding position by power fluid which is also admitted through coupling 14. In modifications (Figs. 4, 5 and 8, 9, not shown) the spool is urged to a central position by a pair of oppositely acting compression springs and the control pressure unbalances the spool. Axial movement of the output shaft 38 is converted into rotary movement of blades 20 by a sliding cross-head 33 having inclined slots 35 which co-operate with eccentric bosses 28 on the blades. A spring 60 urges the mechanism into its full pitch forward drive position in the event of a failure of the hydraulic system. The rotary coupling comprises a stationary part provided with radial bores 94, 102, 103 and 114 which communicate via annular grooves 112 and bores in a rotary part 13 which is secured to a tail shaft 16. Thus the whole apparatus can be easily fitted to an existing vessel not originally built with a variable pitch propeller. Figs. 6, 7 and 11-13 (not shown) illustrate a number of different couplings incorporating floating seals which allow for a small degree of eccentricity in shaft 16. Fig. 15 illustrates a schematic system in which the pitch angle is indicated at a remote station by measuring the pressure inside hollow shaft 38, and the pitch is controlled automatically in accordance with engine temperature. Oil from the interior of shaft 38 is returned via bores 97, 98, 99, 56, 101 to outlet bore 103 which feeds a lubricating passage (not shown) in the tail shaft bearing.
