Abstract

1341305 Composting garbage or organic waste SFRIR (SOC FRANCAISE D'INCINERATION DE RESIDUS) 18 Aug 1971 38820/71 Heading C1B A fermentation process for transforming household garbage and organic waste of plant origin into compost comprises the following successive stages: (A) a rapid aerobic alcoholic fermentation stage comprising homogenizing the substances to be treated, adjusting their water content to between 25 and 50% by weight, adjusting the pH of the medium to between 2À5 and 4 by addition of mineral acid (e.g. orthophosphoric acid), and injecting air into the mass, (B) a conditioning stage comprising, when the alcoholic fermentation of stage (A) is in full process, stopping the injection of air and isolating the interior of the mass from ambient air, regulating the water content of the mass to between 40 and 80% by weight and adjusting the pH of the medium to between 7 and 8 by addition of an alkaline agent (e.g. an alkaline earth or alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide) thereby achieving a progressive change from the aerobic conditions of stage (A) to anaerobic conditions, and (C) a slow "hydrogenated fermentation" stage comprising, while maintaining the anaerobic conditions of the end of stage (B) and without adding water, adding nitrogenous materials to the mass and allowing said mass to mature. The nitrogenous materials added in stage (C) may be ammonia amines or plant products such as grass cuttings or leaves. Optionally a swelling agent may be added in stage (A) and/or (B) and specified are iron, aluminium or bismuth salts or argillaceous earth.
