1341040 Preparing triarylcarbinols IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 July 1971 [28 Aug 1970] 41606/71 Heading C4P Triarylcarbinols of the general formula wherein R and R<SP>2</SP> are optionally substitued alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, X is an optionally substituted aryl radical and rings A and B may be further substituted, or lactones of these carbinols are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding leuco compound with an organic or inorganic persulphate, preferably using 1À0 to 1À5 molar equivalents of persulphate per mole leuco compound at 20-100‹ C. Preferably R-R<SP>3</SP> are methyl or ethyl and X is an optionally substituted 4-dimethylamino-phenyl radical.
