Abstract

1340425 Foamed gelled plastisols ARMSTRONG CORK CO 10 March 1971 6443/71 Heading C3C [Also in Divisions B1-B2] A surface covering material in sheet form is obtained by forming a gelled foamable plastisol sheet, producing a decorative coating on the surface of a gelled sheet, applying a transparent adhesive layer over the decorative coating, applying a flock over the adhesive, heating the flocked covered gelled plastisol sheet thus obtained to expand the plastisol layer and set the adhesive and embossing the expanded sheet to render the decorated coating visible from all directions to the flock. The process is shown and chematically in Fig. 1. The foamable plastisol is normally of polyvinyl chloride, plasticized with a plasticizer, e.g. dioctyl phthalate. The gelation step is carried out in a manner such that the blowing agent is not decomposed, e.g. in an oven at 400‹ F., the time being controlled to ensure that the blowing agent is not decomposed. After application of the flock the entire structure is heated to fuse and expand the resin of the formable plastisol and set the flock in the adhesive. The final embossing step may be at the temperature existing in the product when it first comes out of the expansion oven. The plastisol exemplified was a mixture of polyvinyl chloride, epoxidized soya bean oil, lead-2- ethylhexanolate, dioctyl phthalate azodicarbonamide and titanium dioxide.
