Abstract

1340341 Rotary shift seals CHARLES WESTON & CO Ltd 1 Jan 1971 [7 Jan 1970] 710/70 Heading F2B Sealing means for apparatus, e.g. an air actuated clutch, in which operating fluid is transmitted through a rotary shaft 6 from a stationary pipe comprises a pair of axially spaced stationary contact rings 16 each engaged by a rotatable sealing ring 21 and mounted between the seal housing 11 and an end cover 12 and forming with the latter a chamber 30, 31 through which cooling water is circulated. The rings 21 are carried by carriers 20 urged apart by springs 24 compressed between driving rings 22 which are interconnected by pins 23 and driven from a shaft sleeve 19 by keys 25. The rings 16 are sealed to the covers 12 by O-rings 18. Lubricating oil is supplied from feeders 27 to bearing bushes 17 and to the sealing contact faces of rings 16 and 21; oil leakage to atmosphere being prevented by lip seals 15. The sealing faces are further lubricated by oil mist provided in the air supply in the space 32. Operating air is fed from a pipe connection 10 to an axial passage 7 in the shaft via radial passage 8 in the shaft and sleeve 19. Cooling water is circulated through inlets 28 and 29 to chambers 30 and 31. Rotation of the housing 11 is prevented by inserting a bolt (not shown) in a socket 36.
