Abstract

1340213 Paper-making apparatus J M VOITH GmbH 11 June 1971 [13 June 1970] 27589/71 Heading D2A A suction box comprises a suction chamber 48 and a discharge chamber 49 having a discharge duct 45, the chambers being separated by a partition 47 having at least one aperture 50 for the flow of white water, the flow crosssection or the aperture position being adjustable. The suction box is intended for use with adjacent similar suction boxes in the web forming zone constructions described in Specification 1143604. As shown in Fig. 5 there are a plurality of apertures each of which has a lockable handle operated slidable cover plate for controlling the flow of white water through the aperture. In a second embodiment, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), a single aperture is controlled by a pivoted trapezoidal cover plate having an edge which may be rectilinear, kinked or curved. In a third embodiment, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), a single aperture is controlled by two pivoted trapezoidal cover plates, and the discharge chamber has a discharge duct at each of its ends. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 12 (not shown), similar to that in Figs. 10 and 11, each cover plate carries at its end remote from its pivot a pivotally mounted auxiliary cover plate which can be separately adjusted. In a fifth embodiment, Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown), the partition comprises the upper run of an endless metal or rubber strip which has an aperture in it whereby by 'moving the strip the position of the aperture is altered. The strip extends over pairs of rollers one of which is drivable through gearing by a hand crank. The aperture may be circular, elliptical, rectangular or trapezoidal, or be of irregular shape, and the bottom run of the strip is perforated. In a sixth embodiment, Figs. 15 and 16, a single aperture has at one of its longitudinal sides an adjustably mounted, rectangular, rigid cover plate, and at its other longitudinal side a thin cover diaphragm of rubber, plastics or metal, e.g. steel, and which is flexibly adjustable in its own plane by push rods, its flexibility being enhanced by deep slits being cut in its edge remote from the aperture. In a seventh embodiment, Figs. 17 and 18 (not shown), a single aperture is controlled only by a thin flexible cover diaphragm similar to that in Figs. 15 and 16 although control; may be by two such diaphragms. The invention may be applied to a cylinder mould machine.
