Abstract
1340204 Alkali metal silicate foams FIBERGLAS CANADA Ltd 9 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969 4 Nov 1970] 53125/70 Heading C1A A rigid silicate foam is formed by hydrating finely divided alkali metal silicates which contain <5% H 2 O to a give a material containing 5-30% H 2 O, which is thermally expanded by rapid vapourization of the water of hydration. The ratio of Na 2 O : SiO 2 is preferably from 1 : 1 to 1 : 6. Complexing agents may be added to insolubilize the foam. The particle size of the foam is preferably 5-40Á and hydration is carried out with water vapour at 20-350‹ C.
