Abstract

1340173 Joint-making packing THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP 24 Jan 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 3269/72 Heading F2B A method of sealing a pair of mating flanges or other members forming part of a structure which normally operates at an elevated temperature of at least 200‹ F. with an elastomeric gasket comprises the steps of interposing a solid mouldable polyacrylate sealant (e.g. in the form of an O- section strip), pressing the flanges or other parts toward one another, and operating the structure at the elevated temperature to convert the sealant to elastomeric form. The invention is applicable to forming a seal in situ between the flanges of the oil sump or rocker arm cover gasket of an automotive engine normally operating at 250‹-350‹ F. The initial position of the sealant and flange 16 is shown by dotted lines; when the flanges are drawn together, the sealant spreads between the flanges and into any groove 20 which may be provided.
