Abstract

1340127 Position encoders SOC D'ETUDES RECHERCHES ET CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRONIQUES 19 April 1971 [18 Feb 1970 26 May 1970] 22009/71 Heading G4H [Also in Division G3] In a co-ordinate drive system, of say a wiring tool, where the position of the tool is indicated by a scale having a series of conductive strips insulated from one another and a pair of which are shorted together at the position of the tool, the drive motor being stopped when the tool reaches a desired position, but due to overshoot is reversed, this process being repeated a predetermined number of times to accurately position the tool. The shorting of the strips may be by a roller or a light beam activating photoconductive material separating the strips. Various arrangements of strips and interconnections of strips are described to further encode the position of the tool along a scale. In Fig. 5 two interslotting combs 63, 65 provide between them odd numbered strips and individual strips the even numbered ones, separate connections being made to each of the strips and each of the combs. In another arrangement (Fig. 6, not shown) each of the strips are connected to one of eight conductors, the pattern of connections enabling encoding from the eight conductors. In Fig. 7 even numbered strips are represented by two strips and connected to conductors 0 to 9 and odd numbered strips are connected together in decades 0, 1, 2 ....
