Abstract
1340092 Automatic control of image intensifiers STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 4 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 13907/71 Heading G3R In a channel plate image intensifier, including a photocathode, a channel plate and a phosphor, the voltage across the channel plate is controlled by a signal derived at least in part from the current in the phosphor. In the embodiment shown, a control signal, proportional to the current in phosphor 23 of image intensifier 20, is derived from the voltage across resistor 28 by amplifier 29, and compared with an adjustable reference from amplifier 31 by differential amplifier 30, to provide a variable bias to transistor 33. Using light emitting diode 27, this bias changes the resistance of vacuum photodiode 26 and thus the voltage across channel plate 22, which is derived from a voltage multiplier 24, fed from a battery through oscillator 25, the multiplier providing a fixed voltage between the intensifier photocathode 21 and phosphor 23. In other embodiments, the voltage multiplier may be replaced by fixed and variable power supplies, the latter being controlled directly from the differential amplifier, Fig.1, (not shown), and the control signal, derived from the product of the phosphor current and the voltage between the channel plate and the phosphor, may be used to control the power dissipated in the phosphor, Fig. 2.
