Abstract

529,319. Automatic volume control. HAZELTINE CORPORATION. May 26, 1939, No. 15759. Convention date, June 21, 1938. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] Bias for automatic gain control in a television receiver is developed from the slope of the trailing edge of the synchronizing signals, and is thus not affected by variation of the average intensity of the carrier due to variation of background illumination. An output from the detector 15 is applied to a limiter tube 21, which only passes a portion of the synchronizing pulses to a transformer 26. The output from the transformer 26, being the time differential of the input, is a measure of the slope of the synchronizing pulse and is rectified by a diode 27 and developed as a control voltage across a circuit 28. 29. This voltage is applied to the control electrodes in one or more of the units 12, 13, 14. The time constant of the circuit 28, 29 is long compared with the fieldscanning period, it may be 1/10 second.
