Abstract

1339897 Glow plugs SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Jan 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 5099/70 Heading F1B The invention relates to apparatus comprising a combustion chamber and a glow plug arranged to be inserted into a bore 35 extending through the wall 36 of the chamber. The glow plug includes a body 1 which is fast with the glow plug element and which is arranged to be inserted into the bore 35 with a shoulder 17 on the body seated against an annular ledge 37 in the bore and a sleeve 18 which is captively mounted on the body for both axial and rotational movement relative thereto and which has a thread 22 arranged to cooperate with a thread 38 in the bore so as to urge the shoulder on the body into engagement with the annular ledge in the bore to mount the glow plug in the chamber. The axial length of threaded engagement between the sleeve 18 and the chamber when the glow plug is mounted in the bore is substantially greater than the length of permitted relative axial movement between the sleeve and the body 1 so as to enable the body to be partially withdrawn from the chamber during unscrewing the body therefrom. The construction is intended to facilitate removal of a glow plug which is held in place by combustion deposits. As described the combustion chamber is a pre-combustion chamber of a compression ignition engine.
