1339892 Apparatus for controlling passage of vehicles D E T ARGENT and S M HAWES 18 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62340/69 Heading E2M Control apparatus for the passage of wheeled vehicles comprises a barrier 30 pivoted on a horizontal axle 31 there being means for raising this barrier operated by a release lever 37, and means for lowering the barrier after the vehicle has passed, this means operated by a depressable ramp 40 in the carriageway. As shown, one embodiment has a counterweight 34 connected by a cable 33 to a pulley wheel 32, which wheel has a stop 29 which may be engaged by a member 35, moveable by movement of lever 37, and a stop 46 which engages with a rubber block 47 to limit the upward travel of the barrier. The counterweight 34 also has a cable 37 connecting it to a post 41 on the ramp 40, a bar 43 centrally pivoted on a post 45 preventing upward pivoting of the ramp 40 (about a hinged edge 42) due to the action of a spring 50 and the counterweight 34. On pulling the lever 37, which may require a coin to be inserted in a coin release mechanism in the post 38, the member 35 is withdrawn from its abutment with the stop 29 and the bar 43 from its abutment with the post 41, this allowing both the ramp 40 and the barrier 30 to rise, and the vehicle to pass. On depressing the ramp 40 the bar 43 urged by a spring 44 abuts the post and holds the ramp down, the counterweight is raised, the barrier lowered and the stop 29 of the pulley engages behind member 35. A second described embodiment, shown in Fig. 3, has a bar 14 as its barrier, pivoted about 2, the release lever 17 serving to lower, via a cable 16 which releases latch mechanisms 15, the barrier 14 and, via rods 5 (or optionally cables), raise the ramp 9. The latch mechanisms 15 are situated in guideways 11 for the barrier member.
