Abstract

1339601 Cast metal wheel disc GEORGE BLAIR & CO Ltd 19 Feb 1971 5044/71 Heading B7C A wheel disc of ferrous metal has a central hub 1 and a scalloped formation consisting of lugs 7, each with a bolt hole 16 to which lugs a wheel rim or tyre-carrying rim can be bolted, the lugs being provided on the radially outer surface of a ring 6 which is joined to the central hub through a circumferentially wavy or corrugated web member 5 which has, leading from the hub towards each lug, at least one thickened portion 11 lying in an angle formed by two adjacent axial and circumferential sides of the waves or corrugations in the web. The web member provides, alternately, surfaces 18 forming part of a frustum of one pyramid, and surfaces 19 forming part of a frustum of another pyramid. The two pyramids are symmetrically disposed, and point in opposite directions relative to the axis of the wheel disc. Planar portions 20 lying in axial planes of the wheel disc interconnect surfaces 18 and 19. The wheel disc may be manufactured by casting the disc from a mould in which ridges forming said angles of the web leading towards the lugs have been relieved along their length to form the thickened portions from the hub towards the lugs. Said thickened portions 11 act as feeders for the metal to the lugs 7 when the wheel-disc is cast.
