Abstract

1339516 Smoke-producing compositions LINDESBERGSINDUSTRIAB 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 27060/71 Heading C1D [Also in Division F3] A smoke producing composition which is solid below 40‹ C. but pourable at 75‹ C. comprises a mixture of a filler and at least 8% by weight of an organic binding agent, 75% of the filler having a particle size from 0À5 to 750 micrometers. The binding agent may be a mixture of naphthalene, stearic acid, paraffin wax or asphalt with a liquid hydrocarbon distillate: alternatively the binder may be colophony or a meltable plastics substance. Sulphur, silicon, or metals, or compounds thereof, may be added to the binder to improve the thickness of the smoke. The filler may be a pigment or dye and may consist of particles of different sizes. Suitable fillers are carbon black or an azo, azine, thiazine. amino, or indigo dye deposited on kieselguhr, disintegrated asbestos, or ochre; other pigments referred to are zinc white, lithopone, and ultramarine. The composition may be used for the non-detonable part of a burst marking charge in practice bombs, ammunition and mines (see Division F3).
