Abstract

1339435 Enamelling metals BAYER AG 2 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969 7 March 1970] 57189/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division B2] Metallic substrates are surface-treated (as defined), coupled with a first layer comprising a water-soluble, film-forming, organic polymer, shaped, and then provided with a firmly adherent protective layer e.g. of B-Ti white enamel. The surface treatment is one or more of the following: rough alkaline degreasing, fine electrolytic degreasing, rinsing, electrolytic pickling and electrolytic nickel coating. The first layer may be partially or completely removed before application of the protective layer. It may comprise in addition to the filmforming water-soluble, film-forming organic polymers at least one water-soluble polymer with a molecular weight of up to 2000. Suitable water-soluble film-forming polymers are polyethyleneoxide, polyvinyl alcohol or partially saponified polyvinyl acetates, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylamides and copolymers which contain acrylamide e.g. copolymers with acrylic acid esters or acrylic acids, optionally as their salts, polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid and their copolymers, optionally in the form of their salts, water-soluble cellulose derivatives such as methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, alginates and pectins, water-soluble copolymers formed by reacting copolymers of maleic anhydride e.g. with styrene, isobutylene or ethylene with decomposition of the anhydride group, the compounds being salts, amides or amide ammonium salts which contain carboxyl groups. The method may be used for application to steel sheets which may then be drawn or pressed. The first coating may be applied by brushing or spraying. The enamel preferably consists of in percentage by weight SiO 2 38; Al 2 O 3 0À5; B 2 O 3 21; alkali metal oxide 15; fluorine 2; TiO 2 19; Mg 0À5 and P 2 O 5 3.
