Abstract
1339376 Acrylic powder coating compositions FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 1 June 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 25647/72 Heading C3P A powder coating composition comprises a mixture of (A) a thermoplastic acrylic polymer of number average molecular weight 30,000 to 80,000 and a Tg of 60-110‹ C.; (B) an antistatic agent present in an amount sufficient to give the composition a resistivity of 10<SP>6</SP> to 10<SP>11</SP> ohm/cm; and (c) 0À1 to 10% by wt. based on the total composition, of a flow control agent which is a polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least 1000 and a Tg below 40‹ C. The acrylic polymer may be, for example, polymethyl methacrylate, polyethyl methacrylate, or a copolymer of two or more of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. The polymer may also contain units derived from glycidyl methacrylate or methacrylic acid. The antistatic agent may preferably be a solid tertiary amine or 2- methyl-4-ethyl imidazole. Others such as alkyl(polyethyleneoxy) phosphates, alkyl aryl (polyethyleneoxy) phosphates, polyethyleneimine, poly(2-vinylpyrollidone), pyridinium chloride, poly(vinyl pyridinium chloride); polyvinyl alcohol and certain inorganic salts, may also be used. Examples of the flow control agent are polylauryl acrylate or methacrylate, polybutyl acrylate, poly(2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate), or poly- (2-ethyl hexyl methacrylate). The flow control agent may also be a fluorinated polymer such as an ester of a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol with a fluorinated fatty acid such as perfluorooctanoic acid. The composition may also contain a pigment and/or plasticizer. In use the powders are coated on to substrates e.g. by electrostatic methods, and baked on. In the examples, steel panels are coated.
