Abstract

1339335 Blow-moulding W SCHIEMANN 19 Nov 1971 53980/71 Heading B5A Blow-moulding apparatus comprises means to provide a mouth for the article and an inflatable member to return an extension from the mouth inwardly of the moulding and force it against a surface within the moulding by inflating the member to provide increased wall thickness in the article, the inflatable member being withdrawable from the mouth of the article when deflated. As shown, a long parison 11, Fig. 3, is extruded and mould halves 12, 13 closed, nipping it at its upper end and compression moulding neck portion 19 at threads 17, 18 against reinforcing ring 27 supported by inflated bubble 29 on mandrel 21. After blowmoulding, bubble 29 is deflated and advanced to the Fig. 3 position, leaving neck ring 27 in position. Plates 41, 42 are closed to nip the parison against mandrel 21 and opened and mandrel 21 is further advanced (Fig. 5, not shown) until a second bubble 48 is located in neck 19, turning in the tip 51 of the closed parison which is then torn open by the inflation of bubble 48 through a second channel in mandrel 21. The material (52) turned inwardly is thereby pressed against the inside surface of the blow-moulded article, reinforcing it. The neck portion is thus reinforced not only by ring 27 but also by double thickness of parison.
