Abstract

1338921 Attaching connections PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 40305/71 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] A method of securing end contacts to an electrical cable 1, Fig. 1, which cable comprises a core 3 provided with an electrical conductor, such as an electrically conducting heating wire 4, and a fibre coating 2 of an electrically insulating material, comprises providing the cable with a clamping member 5 near the cable end, folding back over the clamping member a length of fibre 7, Fig. 5, between the clamping member and the cable end, sliding an end contact 8 provided with two coaxially aligned bores (9), 10, Fig. 3 (not shown), of different diameters on to the cable end, the smaller diameter bore accommodating a bored part of the core and the larger diameter bore extending over the clamping member and the folded coating to beyond the clamping member, and crimping the end contact on the side of the clamping member remote from the cable end. The end contact may have any desired external shape, e.g. a bore of rectangular cross-section, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). In alternative embodiments, where the contact is formed from a metal sheet, a pin or screw may be driven into the core after the end contact has been placed on the cable. Also, a pin and bush assembly (15), (16), Fig. 11 (not shown), may be used to prevent part (14), Fig. 8 (not shown), of the sheet from opening. After insertion of the pin or screw, the bush (16) can be connected to the end contact by welding, soldering or crimping. The clamping members may comprise strips, bushes, foils or wires which may be wound on to the cable in either a single layer or a spiral. The flexible core of electrically insulating material may comprise glass or asbestos fibres or synthetic resinous materials, and the coating consist of one or more braids and/or spinnings of a fibre material, e.g. glass fibre.
