1338730 Detecting gases electrically BORGWARNER CORP 9 Nov 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 51769/72 Heading G1N A breath alcohol testing system includes a normally balanced bridge circuit having first and second substantially identical alcohol sensing elements, such as heated catalyst resistances, in adjacent arms. First and second substantially the same samples of deep breath are obtained and the first sample is supplied directly to the first sensing element simultaneously with the second sample being supplied via an alcohol removal stage, such as a heated platinum wire to the second sensing element. Thus the effect of carbon dioxide and water in the two samples on the sensing elements is balanced out in the bridge. The bridge unbalance is indicated on a meter or by a lamp which is illuminated when the alcohol concentration in the first sample exceeds a predetermined level. The sensing elements may be of the ionization or semiconductor type.
