1337994 Making cans D E SUMMER L K ROCKWELL P C ROGERS N A LAZNIBAT C A GUNSALUS W H BRAWNER G R KIMMICH L J PLOURDE M W McGUIRE and G F SMYTH 4 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 57818/70 Headings B3Q and B3A [Also in Division B8] A hollow body is formed with a flange and a neck at one or both ends by expanding the body and forming the flange(s) while restraining movement of that part(s) which is to provide the neck(s). A number of cans may be formed sequentially or simultaneously in a multistation machine having upper and lower stationary cam drums 13, 15, Fig. 1, for raising a can support 21 to position a can in an open divided die 23 and lowering a panel into the can. An elastomeric sleeve 39 on the punch expands the can between restraining sections 43, 45 in the die and also flanges the ends of the can. A groove 51 in the sleeve 39 prevents the sleeve getting between the can and die. A star-wheel may feed cans to the machine and an arrangement may be used in which the punch is not reciprocated. The punch may be lubricated before insertion in the can. In another form, Fig. 2, the elastomeric sleeve is frusto-conical so that the can is expanded progressively and may be slightly lengthened by the upward progression. A further form, Fig. 4, uses a flexible bag 269 into which air or water is fed to inflate the can. The bag-carrier 267 may be reciprocated to increase inflation pressure. Steel, tin plate or aluminium cans may be formed of a variety of shapes, Figs. 8-12 (not shown), the expansion operation being effective to test seam strength.
