Abstract

1337697 Discharge collecting appliances SHERWOOD MEDICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 16 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 28391/72 Heading A5R A device for collecting urine from a patient comprises a container, inlet means for conducting urine into the container including means allowing passage of urine in one direction only, and means for preventing the buildup of a continuous column of urine in the inlet means. As shown the container comprises a flexible bag 11 which has at its upper end a transfer chamber 20 defined by a pair of plates 21, 22 the lower ends of which are flared to define a portion 19 to which is sealed a leaf valve 17 so that its upper end 18 is held open. The lower end 24 of a tube conveying urine from a patient projects into chamber 20 and has a part 26 cut away to prevent bridging of urine across the tube 24. To prevent buildup of a column of urine the chamber 20 is vented to the bag by means of a passage 28 formed as an arcuate recess in rear plate 22, and the bag 11 is vented to atmosphere via a filter chamber. In a modification the bag 11 is sealed to the lower end of a control structure which includes the transfer chamber 20, check valve 17 and filter chamber, the filter chamber connecting with both the bag and the chamber 20 and opening to atmosphere.
