Abstract

1337388 Ammunition belt storage and feeding apparatus BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 19 April 1971 [1 Dec 1969] 58540/69 Heading F3C An ammunition belt storage and feeding arrangement comprises a cylindrical drum 14, Fig. 1, which serves as magazine and is rotatably mounted on a spigot 24 carried by an aircraft fuselage, and a belt guiding means located at or adjacent an end 14a of the drum 14 so that, when a helically-coiled ammunition belt 19 is posititioned in the drum with its individual rounds 18 of ammunition disposed substantially radially relatively to the axis of revolution of the drum, the belt 19 can be progressively withdrawn from the end 14a of the drum 14. The belt guiding means is a roller 16, Fig. 2, which is mounted on the aircraft fuselage so that its axis of rotation is substantially radially disposed relative to the axis 14<SP>1</SP> of the drum 14. An ammunition duct 15 is provided between the end 14a of the drum and gun body 12a. The drum has an internal biasing means 14e, Fig. 1, on which the helical coil of ammunition rests and may include springs (not shown) or a screw thread (not shown), and is rotated by means of a motor 21, through a gear 23 and a toothed rack 22 which is mounted on the drum. In use the speed of rotation of the drum is synchronized with the rate of firing of a gun 12, Fig. 2, the gun mechanism draws the belt 19 from the duct 15 and the biasing means 14e urges the belt towards the end 14a of the drum. A space 17 is provided to collect cartridge cases and belt links subsequent to firing the rounds 18, the used cases being ejected through a duct 20 and the links being ejected through a duct 25, Fig. 3.
